New Exhibition at Chicago Cultural Center Spotlights Near North Artists and Mothers
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near North ·
Near North art enthusiasts have a compelling new exhibition to explore this fall with the opening of "Not a Soft Thing: A Group Exhibition by Artist Mothers" at the Chicago Cultural Center. Launching October 25, 2025, the exhibition will showcase the work of 15 diverse artist mothers exploring the intersection of caregiving, creativity, and community through various mediums including painting, photography, ceramics, and installations.
The exhibition, which runs through March 22, 2026, addresses the powerful question: "What does it mean to create in the margins of care?" Several works are specifically designed to be child-friendly and interactive, making this a perfect destination for Near North families looking for meaningful intergenerational experiences. The exhibition challenges viewers to recognize caregiving not as an obstacle to creativity but as a "powerful, generative force within it."
Residents can also take advantage of the upcoming Open House Chicago event spanning 25 neighborhoods, including Near North. "It's a natural fit for Chicago, the city of architecture," notes Eleanor Gorski, CEO of the Chicago Architecture Center. "Whether you're learning more about your own neighborhood or discovering a part of Chicago you've never visited before, Open House is the ultimate way to get to know Chicago." The event will feature more than 40 programs throughout the weekend, including family activities and musical performances at various venues.
