Historic Noel State Bank Building Gets New Chapter as Barnes & Noble Opens in Wicker Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wicker Park ·
Barnes & Noble's long-awaited Wicker Park location is now open in one of Chicago's most stunning architectural gems. CEO James Daunt called it "one of the most beautiful bookstores anywhere in the world," noting that the 1919 building was described by its original architects as "the dernier cri in bank architecture."
The store's distinctive wedge shape and classic columns required custom shelving solutions to work around the building's unique angles and nooks. While the famous bank vault in the basement that previously housed Walgreens' "Vitamin Vault" remains empty and closed to the public, the rest of the space has been transformed into a reader's paradise. Store manager James Pioth says the Wicker Park location will cater to local tastes with offerings likely favoring literary fiction and history, similar to the chain's Lincoln Park store. Preservation Chicago, which played a key role in creating the Milwaukee Avenue Chicago Landmark District that includes the building, expressed excitement about Barnes & Noble recognizing "the incredible potential to reuse the beautiful Noel State Bank as a vibrant destination book store."
Wicker Park residents and book lovers are encouraged to visit the new store, which joins other recent additions to the neighborhood's cultural landscape. The historic building, with its ornate interior and stained-glass ceiling, provides the perfect backdrop for browsing books, vinyl records, toys, and games, creating a new community hub in one of Chicago's most vibrant districts.
