Historic Loop Buildings Get New Life as Residential Conversions Gain Landmark Status

Two iconic buildings in Chicago's Loop recently received preliminary landmark status from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, marking a significant step in their transformation from office space to residential units. Located at 19 South LaSalle Street and 105 West Adams Street, these developments are key components of the city's LaSalle Street Reimagined initiative aimed at revitalizing downtown.

The Art Deco-style Bankers Building at 105 W. Adams Street, known for its distinctive checkered façade, will see its upper 30 floors converted into approximately 400 apartments. Led by Primera Group and Marc Calabria, who purchased the upper floors for

1 million, the project involves a major façade restoration. Meanwhile, at 19 South LaSalle, the former Central YMCA headquarters will be transformed by Igor Gabal and Envoi Partners into roughly 150-170 residential units, with a portion designated as affordable housing.

These conversions reflect a growing trend toward creating more housing options in The Loop. "We need more housing in the Loop for us to survive and continue to evolve into something more like a neighborhood than a business district," noted Michael Edwards, President and CEO of Chicago Loop Alliance. As The Loop continues its transition from purely commercial to a vibrant mixed-use district, now is the perfect time to witness this historic transformation.
