End of an Era: Iconic Violet Hour Cocktail Bar Closes as Wicker Park Prepares for Halloween Festivities
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wicker Park ·
After 18 years of crafting innovative cocktails behind its unmarked door in Wicker Park, The Violet Hour has permanently closed. The James Beard Award-winning establishment announced it would not reopen following what was initially described as a temporary closure due to building damage. Despite negotiations, the bar's management was "regretfully unable to reach a resolution" with their landlord.
The Violet Hour was more than just a bar—it was a Chicago institution that transformed the city's cocktail culture. Having won a James Beard Award for Outstanding Bar Program in 2015, the speakeasy-style lounge established high standards for both its drinks and atmosphere. Its influence extended beyond Chicago, inspiring bars from New Orleans to Louisville, while its signature creations like the Paper Plane became standards on cocktail menus nationwide. Many of its alumni went on to open their own acclaimed establishments throughout Chicago and beyond.
As Wicker Park says goodbye to this iconic venue, residents can look forward to the neighborhood's upcoming BooPalooza and BarkPalooza events on October 18. This Halloween extravaganza at Wicker Park (1425 N. Damen Avenue) will feature free pumpkins, live entertainment, costume parades, and a haunted maze from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Dog owners are especially encouraged to bring their furry friends for BarkPalooza, which includes a dog costume parade, treats, and other canine activities.
