Annual Columbus Day Parade Returns to University Village With Record Attendance

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/University Village Little Italy ·

University Village Little Italy residents came out in full force this past weekend for Chicago's annual Columbus Day Parade, which made its traditional journey down Taylor Street on Saturday, October 18. Organized by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, the parade showcased the neighborhood's rich Italian heritage with colorful floats, marching bands, and cultural performances.

The parade, which began at Balbo and Columbus Drive downtown, wound its way through University Village before concluding on Taylor Street, the heart of Little Italy. Local businesses along the route reported exceptional sales, with Conte Di Savoia, the neighborhood's iconic Italian grocery store since 1948, offering special parade-day sandwich platters that sold out before noon. Other Taylor Street establishments including Tuscany on Taylor and Rosebud Restaurant extended their outdoor seating to accommodate the crowds.

Residents are encouraged to continue celebrating the neighborhood's cultural heritage by visiting the Jane Addams Hull House Museum this month, which offers free admission with welcomed donations. The museum is currently showcasing exhibits highlighting the area's immigrant history, perfect for families looking to explore University Village's rich past.
