New Police Memorial Mural in Garfield Ridge Honors Fallen CPD Officers

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Garfield Ridge ·

A powerful new artwork has emerged in Garfield Ridge, as local artist Milton Coronado completes a striking mural honoring five Chicago police officers killed in the line of duty. Located on South Archer Avenue, the mural features detailed portraits of Officers Andres Vasquez Lasso, Luis Huesca, Areanah Preston, Ella French, and Enrique Martinez, all who lost their lives serving the city over the past four years.

Coronado, who grew up in the Garfield Ridge area, incorporated meaningful symbolism throughout the artwork, including blue roses representing the Chicago Police Department, monarch butterflies signifying eternal life, and a waving Chicago flag as backdrop. Each officer's star is displayed below their portrait with personal elements that represent their individual character. The artist worked closely with the officers' families to ensure accurate and meaningful representations, with French's mother Elizabeth noting he used her favorite photo of her daughter – "She is in her uniform, just smiling. And it just, for me, that was who she was as both a person and a police officer."

The mural marks another meaningful addition to Garfield Ridge's public art landscape, joining other tributes including the bronze statue of Officer Ella French at Wentworth Park that was unveiled earlier this year. Community members interested in viewing the finished mural are encouraged to attend the official unveiling ceremony next week and to watch for announcements from the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch about the event.
