Sprouts Farmers Market Plans First Chicago Store in Jefferson Park, Replacing Failed Trader Joe's Deal

Sprouts Farmers Market is preparing to bring its first Chicago supermarket to Jefferson Park, targeting a property that has sat vacant since 2022. The national health-focused grocery chain shared its plans at a recent town hall meeting hosted by Alderman Jim Gardiner (45th), drawing approximately 120 community members to Branch Community Church.

The announcement comes after Trader Joe's unexpectedly pulled out of the project last month following cost disagreements with property owners. Sprouts, which describes itself as a health-focused store, plans to offer abundant produce with about half being organic items, alongside various products catering to different dietary needs including vegan options, meat, fresh fish, and freshly baked breads. As part of an ambitious expansion, Sprouts intends to open 35 stores in Illinois over the next five years, with the Jefferson Park location expected to open in 2027 if plans are approved.

Alderman Gardiner's office is currently collecting feedback from residents about the new proposal. Local resident Jeffrey Lorenty expressed that while he was initially surprised by Trader Joe's withdrawal, he believes the Sprouts supermarket could be a great opportunity for the community. The health-focused grocer would bring a welcome addition to the neighborhood's shopping options, creating both jobs and convenient access to fresh foods for area residents.
