Wrigley Field Security Upgrades Approved, Paving Way for 2027 All-Star Game
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Wrigleyville ·
The Chicago City Council recently approved a $32.1 million security plan for Wrigley Field that includes installing "anti-terrorism rated security bollards" around the ballpark and widening Addison Street sidewalks by four feet. The project will be funded through a combination of
Currently, Chicago police deploy temporary steel bollards around the ballpark before games and concerts, but security experts note this is insufficient for the venue. The newly approved permanent bollards will create a more robust security perimeter around the historic stadium. This public-private partnership is reportedly key to Wrigley Field securing the 2027 MLB All-Star Game, which would bring the prestigious event to the neighborhood for the first time since 1990. The upgrades will include removable bollards rated to stop vehicles traveling at high speeds, widened sidewalks, and necessary utility relocations.
Wrigleyville Alderman Bennett Lawson described the plan as the "final piece" of Wrigley Field's gradual redevelopment, noting that wider sidewalks will provide "a little bit of breathing room" for fans while improving day-to-day security operations. Though nothing official has been announced about the All-Star Game, Lawson believes the Ricketts family's investments have positioned the team well to host baseball's mid-summer classic. Residents and visitors can look forward to a safer, more pedestrian-friendly Wrigleyville experience once these improvements are completed, potentially bringing increased tourism and business to the area's shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
