Tu Casa Project Breaks Ground: New Puerto Rican Community Center Rising in Humboldt Park
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Humboldt Park ·
Humboldt Park residents are celebrating as construction begins on the Tu Casa community center, a new Puerto Rican cultural hub on Division Street. The project, spearheaded by sisters Michelle and Melissa Gomez, co-owners of Dynamic Productions, aims to provide essential educational programs and senior services for neighborhood residents.
The Gomez sisters, known for organizing the annual Puerto Rican Festival and Parade along with other cultural events, are collaborating with local businesses to raise the estimated
5 million needed for the center. Located at 2626 W. Division St., the center represents a significant milestone for the community, which has been without a Puerto Rican community center for over six years. Alderperson Jessie Fuentes emphasized the importance of the project, noting it will provide "an opportunity for Puerto Ricans, not just in Humboldt Park but across the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois, to have a space where they can enjoy culture" and "be in community with one another." While the development team hopes for a 2026 opening, community members are already looking forward to the programs that will strengthen neighborhood ties and preserve cultural heritage in the face of ongoing gentrification challenges. Residents interested in supporting the project or learning more about planned programming can connect with the development team through community meetings scheduled throughout the coming months.
