Uptown Launches Innovative Narcan Newsstands to Combat Opioid Overdoses
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Uptown ·
Newsstands are making a comeback in Uptown, but with a lifesaving twist. The Chicago Department of Public Health, in partnership with the 46th Ward, has launched an innovative initiative to distribute naloxone—commonly known as Narcan—through repurposed newsstands throughout the neighborhood. The four Narcan newsstands are strategically located outside Nourishing Hope (3945 N. Sheridan Road), Cornerstone Community Shelter (4628 N. Clifton Ave.), Institute of Cultural Affairs (4750 N. Sheridan Road), and the Department of Family and Supportive Services (845 W. Wilson Ave.). This collaborative effort was launched by CDPH and 46th Ward Ald. Angela Clay's office.
Since launching, the program has already distributed nearly 300 boxes of Narcan, with community leaders raising awareness at a recent harm reduction fair. Unlike libraries that close, these Narcan newsstands are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week—ensuring that this life-saving medication is always available when needed. The initiative comes as the city has seen encouraging trends in opioid-related emergencies, with a 24 percent decrease in EMS responses during the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period last year. As Mayor Brandon Johnson noted at the unveiling ceremony, "We know that harm reduction saves lives by treating people with dignity and meeting them where they are." Uptown residents can support this important public health initiative by learning about overdose prevention and spreading awareness about these accessible resources throughout the community.
