Historic Mars Wrigley Factory Redevelopment Takes Shape in Galewood as McCaffery Interests Begins Community Engagement

Galewood residents are one step closer to learning what will replace the sweet aroma of chocolate at the iconic Mars Wrigley factory as redevelopment plans begin to crystallize. The nearly century-old Spanish Colonial Revival building at 2019 N. Oak Park Avenue, which recently received official landmark status from the City of Chicago, will soon enter a new chapter under the guidance of McCaffery Interests Inc.

The Chicago-based development firm, selected after a competitive bidding process, will spearhead the transformation of the 20-acre site, working closely with local community groups to craft detailed plans that honor community wishes. "From the beginning of this whole thing, the fact that Mars, the Mars family, wants to make sure that whatever happens to the site is to the benefit of the community, has been really a great thing," said Steve Green, Chairperson for Galewood Neighbors. Community input has favored a mixed-use development that includes residential spaces, small-scale retail, and generous open spaces, with the historic factory building serving as the centerpiece.

As Mars Wrigley prepares to end production at the facility by year's end, residents interested in contributing to the vision for this landmark property are encouraged to watch for upcoming community engagement sessions. McCaffery CEO Dan McCaffery has promised extensive consultation before finalizing any designs, describing the process as a series of "meeting dates" with neighborhood stakeholders that will help shape this transformative project for Galewood's future.
