Avondale Music Hall Owner Acquires Historic Portage Theater, Plans Community-Focused Transformation

Chicago's Avondale neighborhood is making waves in the local arts scene as Chris Bauman, founder of the Avondale Music Hall, has purchased the historic Portage Theater in Portage Park. The 98-year-old theater, which has sat vacant for seven years, is now poised for a revival under Bauman's vision to create a vibrant "community center" that will host concerts, film screenings, indoor markets, and various performances.
This isn't Bauman's first venture into revitalizing historic venues. In 2018, he transformed the old Club Mambo at Milwaukee and Keystone into the thriving Avondale Music Hall, which now hosts dozens of events monthly. He also purchased and renovated the Patio Theater in 2019, which has since featured a diverse lineup of concerts, dance performances, and community events. For the Portage Theater acquisition, Bauman has restructured his ownership in both venues, now serving as partial owner of the Avondale Music Hall and Patio Theater.
