Avondale Named World's Fifth Coolest Neighborhood as Major Housing Development Moves Forward

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·

Avondale residents have two major reasons to celebrate this fall. TimeOut magazine has ranked the northwest-side community as the world's fifth coolest neighborhood in its prestigious 2025 list, outranking areas in New York, Austin, and Miami. The publication praised Avondale for successfully balancing tradition with growth, noting that "with new wine bars, wellness studios and music venues opening alongside longtime neighbourhood fixtures, there's never been a better time to explore the neighbourhood."

Simultaneously, plans have been revealed for an ambitious residential development at 3265 North California Avenue, transforming a long-vacant site in the neighborhood. The proposal, which was presented at a recent community meeting, includes two multi-unit buildings with 128 apartments and 24 townhomes. Located just north of Belmont Avenue near a park and close to the river, the development aims to bring much-needed housing to what residents describe as "prime real estate" that has sat empty for too long. Community feedback has generally been positive, with many expressing excitement about the increased density and potential for more vibrant street life.

Residents interested in learning more about this development or sharing input on Avondale's future can participate in ongoing neighborhood planning initiatives coordinated by the Avondale Neighborhood Association, which is working with city agencies to create a comprehensive vision for the community's continued growth.
