New Retail Row Transforms Historic Avondale Building as Neighborhood Celebrates Global Recognition
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·
Avondale continues to build on its reputation as one of Chicago's most dynamic neighborhoods following its recent recognition by TimeOut as the world's fifth coolest neighborhood. The accolade, which placed Avondale ahead of trendy areas in New York, Austin, and Miami, praised the community for successfully balancing tradition with growth.
"With new wine bars, wellness studios and music venues opening alongside longtime neighbourhood fixtures, there's never been a better time to explore the neighbourhood," TimeOut wrote in its 2025 ranking. Local entrepreneurs are embracing this momentum, with a collection of small businesses collaborating to transform a historic building along Milwaukee Avenue into a new retail row featuring locally-owned shops. The formerly industrial neighborhood, nicknamed "Bricktown" for its historic brickyards, continues to evolve while maintaining its distinctive mix of two-flats, bungalows, and diverse commercial establishments that reflect its Polish and Latino heritage.
Residents interested in Avondale's development can attend upcoming community planning meetings hosted by the Avondale Neighborhood Association, which is working with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and the City of Chicago Department of Planning to create a comprehensive neighborhood plan that will guide future growth while preserving the area's unique character. The association encourages all community members to participate and share their vision for Avondale's future.
