The beloved Chicago tradition of Christkindlmarket has returned to Daley Plaza, bringing its signature German-inspired holiday celebrations to the heart of The Loop. Visitors can now browse stalls stocked with handmade gifts, sample authentic German food, and enjoy hot beverages while soaking in the festive atmosphere. The market's famous boot mugs filled with spiced glühwein (a German hot wine concoction) have already become a must-have accessory for Loop visitors this season.
The market's opening marks the official start of the holiday season in The Loop, arriving just two weeks after Halloween and coinciding with a continued positive trend in downtown foot traffic. According to recent data, the central business district is seeing record-breaking tourism numbers, with downtown hotels booking nearly 3.6 million room nights from June through August—a 4.3% increase over 2024 that topped pre-pandemic records. Anthony Zoccola, market intelligence analyst at Avison Young, noted, "We're seeing a lot of positive momentum year-over-year" in visitor numbers, with benefits spilling over to local businesses. The Original Rainbow Cone, which recently opened on Michigan Avenue, reports strong initial performance. "Having a Michigan Avenue location really solidifies ourselves as a Chicago institution and a historic brand," says John Buonavolanto of Original Rainbow Cone.
