UIC Student Artwork Transforms Storefront Windows in University Village Little Italy
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/University Village Little Italy ·
University Village Little Italy businesses are getting a creative makeover this month as part of a new community art initiative. The 'Windows of University Village' project has paired UIC art students with local Taylor Street businesses to transform storefront windows into seasonal art installations that celebrate the neighborhood's rich cultural heritage.
The project, which launched last weekend and will remain on display through the end of November, features work from over 20 student artists who have created pieces that blend Italian-American traditions with contemporary artistic styles. Participating businesses include Conte Di Savoia, Tuscany on Taylor, Davanti Enoteca, and several other establishments along the historic Taylor Street corridor. Each installation includes QR codes that visitors can scan to learn about the artists and their inspiration.
'This collaboration strengthens the connection between UIC and our neighborhood businesses while showcasing the incredible talent of our student artists,' said Maria Rossi, president of the University Village Association, who helped coordinate the project. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided walking tour of the installations and share their favorites on social media using #UVLIWindows2025. A community reception with participating artists will be held at Pompei restaurant on November 20th at 6pm.
