Michigan Avenue's Renaissance: Near North's Magnificent Mile Shows Signs of Revival

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near North ·

The heart of Near North's iconic shopping district is showing promising signs of renewal heading into the holiday season. Recent data confirms the Magnificent Mile's steady recovery, with Alderman Brendan Reilly noting, "foot traffic is up, crime is down, and vacancies are dropping" along the famous stretch of North Michigan Avenue.

The area's improvement hasn't gone unnoticed by local business leaders. Kimberly Bares, President and CEO of The Magnificent Mile Association, recently expressed optimism at a City Club of Chicago discussion, stating, "We very much believe we are experiencing a district on the rise." This sentiment is echoed by Nichole Benolken of 360 Chicago Observation Deck who confirmed, "We really see foot traffic and attendance back to pre-pandemic levels." The district's future looks even brighter with Governor JB Pritzker having signed legislation that paves the way for the creation of a Business Improvement District (BID), which will allow for collecting taxes to fund area improvements.

Near North residents and visitors can look forward to a more vibrant Michigan Avenue as private security patrols have been added by the Magnificent Mile Association, and foot traffic is nearing pre-pandemic levels. The area also continues to attract new investment, with Atlanta-based Amli Residential proposing a 56-story residential tower with 498 units at 669 N. Michigan Ave. Near North neighbors are encouraged to attend upcoming community meetings to learn more about these developments and share their input on the future of this vital Chicago landmark.
