Gem Vintage Collective Shines as Newest Addition to Avondale's Thriving Milwaukee Avenue Corridor
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·
Avondale's Milwaukee Avenue shopping district continues to flourish with the recent opening of Gem: A Vintage Collective at 2894 N. Milwaukee Avenue. The new community-focused store, which launched in August, features work and collections from over 30 small business vendors and local artists, offering everything from vintage clothing to handmade home goods.
"Rather than being worried about competition, I think people really like to go to an area where there's a handful of vintage shops that they can check out," said co-owner Kara Leonard, who has a personal connection to the neighborhood as the first place she lived when moving to Chicago. The store aims to be more than just a retail space, with plans to host workshops in sewing, printmaking, and jewelry-making in collaboration with their featured artists and vendors. The ownership team is also creating a photo studio in the back of the store for vendors and community members to photograph their items for social media and marketing purposes.
The addition of Gem further cements Avondale's reputation as one of Chicago's most vibrant neighborhoods, which was recently recognized by TimeOut as the world's fifth coolest neighborhood in its 2025 rankings. Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore this newest addition to the Milwaukee Avenue corridor, which has become a destination for vintage and thrift shoppers with other nearby businesses including Monarch, Vintage Frills, and Kone Ranger.
