Galewood Tree Ambassadors Celebrate Milestone of Over 100 Trees Planted Across Neighborhood

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·

Galewood's ambitious tree canopy expansion has reached an impressive milestone with over 100 trees successfully planted throughout the neighborhood, thanks to the dedicated work of local Tree Ambassadors. The initiative, funded through a federal grant from the USDA, has transformed numerous parkways across the community over the past two years.

The program began in 2023 when Galewood Neighbors was approached by the Chicago Region Tree Initiative and the City of Chicago's Our Roots Program to participate in a pilot initiative aimed at increasing the urban tree canopy. The neighborhood organization successfully secured grant funding, making it one of only a few community groups selected for the program. Since then, their trained Tree Ambassadors have been actively engaging with residents about the environmental, health, economic, and social benefits trees provide.

Residents interested in participating in this ongoing initiative can still request a free tree for their parkway by emailing [email protected]. The small but dedicated group of volunteers behind the project remains committed to improving the neighborhood's environmental health through continued tree planting efforts even after the grant officially ends in June 2025. Community members are encouraged to learn more about the Tree Ambassador Program by visiting the Galewood Neighbors website for information on upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.
