Historic Mars Wrigley Factory Secures Landmark Status as Redevelopment Plans Advance in Galewood
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
The iconic Mars Wrigley factory in Galewood has officially received landmark status from the City of Chicago, preserving an important piece of neighborhood heritage as redevelopment plans move forward. The Spanish Colonial Revival building at 2019 N. Oak Park Avenue, which has produced beloved treats like Snickers and Three Musketeers for nearly a century, will remain the centerpiece of an ambitious community-focused transformation project.
Chicago-based McCaffery Interests, selected after a competitive bidding process, is working closely with Galewood community organizations to shape the future of the 20-acre site. "From the beginning of this whole thing, the fact that Mars, the Mars family, wants to make sure that whatever happens to the site is to the benefit of the community, has been really a great thing," said Steve Green, Chairperson for Galewood Neighbors. Community input has favored a mixed-use development incorporating residential spaces, small-scale retail, and generous open spaces.
Residents interested in contributing to this transformative project are encouraged to stay connected with Galewood Neighbors, as McCaffery CEO Dan McCaffery has promised extensive consultation before finalizing designs. With the redevelopment plan expected to be released in the coming months, the project represents an exciting opportunity for Galewood to honor its past while creating new community spaces for generations to come.
