Clayco's 'Kids Dig' Fundraiser Transforms The 78 Development Site into Children's Construction Playground

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/South Loop ·

South Loop's massive 62-acre development site known as 'The 78' was transformed into a children's construction paradise last month during Clayco's fourth annual 'Kids Dig' fundraiser. Construction firm Clayco hosted the special event at the South Loop development site, allowing young patients from Lurie Children's Hospital to operate heavy construction equipment including excavators, dump trucks, and bulldozers with professional assistance.

The unique community event not only provided an exciting hands-on experience for children and their families but also served as a successful fundraiser. Clayco reported raising

65,000 for Lurie Children's Hospital through the event. This marks the fourth consecutive year the construction firm has organized this heartwarming community initiative, combining construction education with charitable giving.

The 78, located between Roosevelt Road and 16th Street along the Chicago River, continues to be a focal point for South Loop development. The site's name refers to the existing 77 community areas in Chicago, with this area set to become the unofficial 78th. In related news, the owner of Chicago Fire FC proposed building a soccer stadium on the site in June 2025. South Loop residents interested in following development progress or participating in future community events at The 78 can check Clayco's website for upcoming activities.
