Galewood's Tree Canopy Initiative Expands with New Winter Planting Program for 2026
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Galewood ·
Galewood's successful Tree Ambassador Program is expanding with a new winter planning phase announced this week. Galewood Neighbors, the community organization behind the initiative that has already added over 100 trees to the neighborhood, revealed plans for a winter workshop series to prepare for an ambitious spring 2026 planting season.
The program, which began in 2023 through funding from the USDA and Chicago's Our Roots Program, will now include winter planning sessions where residents can learn about urban forestry and help identify priority planting locations across Galewood. "We've seen tremendous environmental benefits from the first 100 trees," said a representative from Galewood Neighbors. "This winter planning phase will allow us to strategically expand the tree canopy where it's most needed."
Residents interested in participating in the winter workshops or requesting a free tree for spring planting can email [email protected]. The organization continues to focus on initiatives that enhance Galewood's green spaces, contributing to the neighborhood's reputation as a community that values environmental sustainability while building stronger connections between neighbors.
