Logan Square's Two-Way Traffic Circle Opens, Transforming Neighborhood's Historic Center

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Logan Square ·

Logan Square residents are celebrating a major transformation of their neighborhood this week as the highly anticipated two-way traffic pattern around the historic Logan Square monument officially opened on November 6. The updated configuration adds safer pedestrian crossings, improves traffic flow, and allows parts of the square to more easily close for community events.

The milestone comes as part of the Milwaukee reconstruction project from Belmont Avenue to Logan Boulevard, which began in April 2024. The northern half of Milwaukee Avenue was completed last year, and the reconfigured traffic circle represents the heart of this massive infrastructure improvement. The new design now allows parts of the square to more easily close for events, creating opportunities for more community gatherings. In fact, the popular Logan Square Farmers Market plans to move its operations to the Milwaukee plaza next year, and the plaza recently hosted its first event: a Dia de Los Muertos market. The area will also be home to Logan Square's long-running music festival, set to return this summer after a hiatus due to construction.

Once fully completed, the project will feature 70 sidewalk extensions, new trees, dotted bike lanes, a walking path around the square, plus two new plazas, new traffic lights, and raised crosswalks. City officials have been promoting the two-way configuration at community meetings since the project's inception. Residents interested in learning more about upcoming events in the newly transformed space can follow updates through the Logan Square Chamber of Commerce or attend community meetings hosted by the 35th Ward office.
