Whole Foods Is Coming to Logan Square — and the Farmers Market Is Moving Indoors: Your Neighborhood's Big Weekend Headlines

By Socialhood News · Logan Square ·

Logan Square is waking up on Halloween morning to grocery news that neighbors have been quietly hoping for: a Whole Foods Market is coming to Milwaukee Avenue, replacing the long-vacant former Family Dollar at Milwaukee and California avenues. The Chicago Sun-Times broke the story on October 29, and it lands just a few blocks from the already-announced Trader Joe's — setting up one of the most dramatic grocery transformations any Chicago neighborhood has seen in years.

The new store will be a smaller-format Whole Foods at 2280 N. Milwaukee Ave., steps from the California Blue Line CTA station. According to the Sun-Times, the format will offer "a curated selection of groceries and prepared foods in a smaller footprint than a traditional Whole Foods" — a design well-suited to a transit-oriented corner where many residents commute without a car. 1st Ward Ald. Daniel La Spata, who confirmed the project, noted that the former Family Dollar property has already been undergoing renovations in recent months and that the store is likely to open on an accelerated timeline. A Whole Foods spokesperson confirmed the development to the Sun-Times but did not share a specific opening date or operational details.

The timing of the announcement adds a second grocery anchor to a corridor already tracking a Trader Joe's. That store — planned for 2053 N. Milwaukee Ave., the former CVS building a few blocks north — is eyeing an early 2027 opening, with renovation permits already in the works. Taken together, the two announcements represent a seismic shift for a neighborhood that has long been a dining and nightlife destination but has never had a full-service grocery option at the heart of its commercial spine. For the thousands of new residents who have moved into Logan Square's wave of new apartment buildings over the past two years, both stores will be walkable from home and reachable in one Blue Line stop.

What makes the Whole Foods news particularly notable is where it is landing. The California Blue Line stop at Milwaukee and California is one of the busiest on the Northwest Side, and the corner has been a persistent gap in the neighborhood's retail fabric since Family Dollar vacated. The smaller-format model Whole Foods is bringing to Logan Square is the same concept the company has deployed at transit-heavy urban locations elsewhere — built for basket sizes that fit a tote bag, not a trunk. For neighbors who already shop at the California Farmer's Market or pick up produce at Pete's Fresh Market further west, a walkable Whole Foods adds another option to a grocery ecosystem that is finally catching up with the neighborhood's density.

Meanwhile, the Logan Square Farmers Market is making its own seasonal transition this weekend. The market held its final outdoor Sunday of 2026 on October 25 at 2620 N. Milwaukee Ave. — closing out the first full season it spent at what its producer calls its permanent home on the newly rebuilt Milwaukee Avenue plaza. Every Sunday since May 10, up to 103 rotating farmers and food vendors filled the plaza and part of Logan Boulevard between Kedzie and Milwaukee, running from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. That outdoor run is now complete.

The good news for market regulars: the Logan Square Farmers Market does not disappear in winter. It shifts indoors to 2800 N. Milwaukee Ave. starting Saturday, November 28, running Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and continuing into spring 2027. The day-of-week shift from Sunday to Saturday is worth noting for anyone who has built the market into their weekend routine — the indoor season has its own rhythm, and the first Saturday after Thanksgiving is the kickoff date to put on the calendar now.
