Palmer Square's First Winter Arboretum Art Installation Unveiled as Community Celebration
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square residents have a new reason to visit their neighborhood park this winter as the recently designated arboretum debuts its first seasonal art installation. Following the park's historic recognition as Chicago's first official arboretum in September by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program, the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council has announced a community celebration highlighting the park's distinctive tree collection through illuminated art displays placed throughout the grounds.
The installation celebrates Palmer Square Park's Level I arboretum accreditation achieved in September 2025, making it the first Chicago Park District location to receive this prestigious designation through ArbNet, administered by The Morton Arboretum. The recognition caps decades of community effort that began in 1980 when the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square started creating a tree sanctuary in the park. What began with approximately 37 trees has flourished into a collection of over 200 trees representing 28 different species through consistent planting efforts funded by community donations and fundraisers. Residents are encouraged to visit the illuminated arboretum during evening hours throughout December and to participate in guided winter tree identification tours being offered each weekend.
