Palmer Square Launches Holiday Craft Series in Historic Arboretum Setting
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square Park, which received Level I arboretum accreditation by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in September 2025, is enhancing its winter programming with a new holiday craft workshop series. This historic designation made it the first Chicago Park District location to be recognized as an accredited arboretum through ArbNet, administered by The Morton Arboretum and the only accreditation program specific to arboreta in the world. The recognition celebrates the park's commitment to maintaining a thriving tree canopy and preserving its diverse collection of over 28 tree varieties, including a historic elm grove.
The newly announced Winter Bazaar, opening November 29 in the former Extraordinarium retail space, will operate every Saturday through March 29, 2026, providing Palmer Square residents with a consistent community gathering spot during the colder months. The series will feature workshops where participants can create nature-inspired holiday decorations using sustainable materials gathered from the arboretum's seasonal pruning efforts. Local artisans will lead sessions on wreath-making, botanical ornaments, and natural centerpieces, connecting the neighborhood's newly celebrated arboretum status with seasonal festivities.
Residents are encouraged to register early as workshop spaces are limited. The Palmer Square Park Advisory Council is also seeking volunteers to help with the bazaar and craft series. This initiative brings together the neighborhood's environmental achievement with community building, offering residents a unique way to celebrate the holiday season while appreciating Palmer Square's natural heritage.
