Historic Humboldt Park Boathouse to Welcome New All-Day Café from Michelin-Starred Team

The historic Humboldt Park Boathouse will soon be home to a vibrant new dining destination as plans move forward for Café Valera, an all-day eatery with beer garden from the team behind Lincoln Park's acclaimed North Pond restaurant. The Chicago Park District recently approved the project as part of

2 million in TIF-funded improvements coming to the 219-acre park.

According to developers Alexander Gonzalez and César Murillo, the café will offer grab-and-go options including pastries, empanadas, sandwiches, and Cubano sliders, with ingredients sourced from local farmers and businesses. "What we want for this area is some sort of market that brings people into the space and draws attention to it," explained Gonzalez at a recent community meeting. The team envisions hosting farmers markets, art pop-ups, small music shows, and chef collaborations at the venue, which will utilize about a third of the boathouse's veranda and patio space.

The new café, expected to open by May 2026, will create approximately 22 jobs for neighborhood residents, with the team planning to host job fairs to attract local talent. Humboldt Park residents interested in learning more about employment opportunities or providing feedback on the proposal can attend upcoming community meetings or contact the Humboldt Park Advisory Council.
