The Chicago-based firm will connect with neighborhood groups and City Hall to draft a plan for the Spanish Revival-designed building at 2019 N. Oak Park Ave., which dates back to 1929 and is expected to receive official landmark status from the City Council.
"We're going to talk to a lot of people before we put pencil to paper on this," said McCaffery CEO Dan McCaffery, describing the process as a series of "meeting dates" with stakeholders to gather input. Community discussions could begin within weeks, with a comprehensive development plan potentially ready for city approval sometime in 2025. The picturesque factory, which has produced iconic treats like Snickers and Milky Way bars for nearly a century, deserves a thoughtful second life.
Galewood residents who wish to participate in shaping the future of this neighborhood landmark should watch for upcoming meeting announcements. The Local Initiatives Support Corporation report, developed with input from Austin Coming Together, Galewood Neighbors, and Northwest Center, outlined community desires for a mixed-use development featuring community areas, green spaces, housing, and small businesses. McCaffery's detailed development plan is expected in the coming months, with rezoning processes remaining public to ensure continued community feedback.
