Near North Residents Set to Benefit as Chicago Adopts Central Area Plan 2045
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Near North ·
Near North residents can look forward to significant enhancements in their neighborhood following the unanimous approval of Chicago's Central Area Plan 2045 by the Chicago Plan Commission. The comprehensive downtown development plan, which includes Near North, Near West, Near South sides and adjacent neighborhoods, establishes a community-guided vision for the fastest-growing downtown in the United States.
Developed through a two-year public engagement process involving more than 10,000 participants, the plan aims to shape downtown's future with over 250 goals and strategic projects across eight planning pillars. For Near North residents, this means coordinated redevelopment of vacant and underutilized sites, mobility enhancements through next-generation trails and riverwalks, and the creation of hybrid open spaces that can serve as markets and event venues. The plan also supports the mixed-use evolution of the area through office-to-residential conversion projects, which could increase housing options in the neighborhood.

The comprehensive framework is designed to accommodate projections for more than 100 million square feet of new construction and 100,000 new residents in central Chicago through 2045, ensuring Near North continues to evolve as a vibrant, accessible, and sustainable urban community.
