By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·

West Pullman residents have reason to celebrate as the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) confirms construction of the long-awaited Red Line Extension project will begin in early 2026. The transformative $5.7 billion transportation initiative will bring a new station at Michigan Avenue in West Pullman, significantly improving residents' access to downtown and other parts of the city.

The Red Ahead program, which will extend the Red Line south to 130th Street, will result in a new station at Michigan Avenue in West Pullman. Construction is estimated to begin in 2026 and be completed by 2030. The ambitious project includes four new Red Line stations on the Far South Side, near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue and 130th Street. Preparatory work is already underway, with demolition of buildings and relocation of power lines in the track path having started.

Residents interested in learning more about construction timelines and community impacts can attend upcoming information sessions hosted by the CTA. The Red Line Extension project is expected to create thousands of jobs and stimulate economic development throughout West Pullman and surrounding neighborhoods. When completed in 2030, the new transit option will connect residents to educational opportunities, employment centers, healthcare services, and cultural attractions throughout Chicago.
