Palmer Square Park Unveils First Winter Arboretum Festival to Celebrate Historic Designation

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·

Palmer Square residents will soon experience the neighborhood's first Winter Arboretum Festival, celebrating the park's recent historic designation as Chicago's first officially accredited arboretum. The Palmer Square Park Advisory Council announced the special event series will begin next weekend, showcasing the park's impressive collection of over 200 trees representing 28 different species.

The designation, awarded in September by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program administered by the Morton Arboretum, marks Palmer Square as the first Chicago Park District property to receive this prestigious recognition. The winter programming will feature guided tree identification walks, educational sessions about winter ecology, and family-friendly outdoor exploration activities designed to connect neighbors while appreciating the arboretum's winter landscape. Special illuminated displays throughout the park will highlight notable trees in the collection, creating a festive atmosphere for evening visitors.

Residents interested in participating in the Winter Arboretum Festival can register through the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website. The inaugural winter celebration represents the culmination of decades of community effort that began in 1980, when the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square started transforming what was once a park with only 37 trees into today's thriving canopy of over 200 trees through consistent planting efforts funded by community donations and fundraisers.
