Swedish Tradition Returns: Andersonville's Julmarknad Holiday Market Set for December 5-7

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Andersonville ·

Andersonville's beloved Swedish holiday tradition returns next weekend as the Julmarknad Handcraft Market & Festival takes over the Swedish American Museum from December 5-7, 2025. The annual Christmas bazaar celebrates the neighborhood's rich Scandinavian heritage with a vibrant marketplace featuring traditional and modern handicrafts.

Visitors to the museum at 5211 N. Clark Street will discover an impressive array of artisan offerings, including specialty glasswork, handcrafted clothing, woodwork, jewelry, ceramics, and textiles. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by seasonal Swedish treats like glögg (mulled wine), saffron buns, and traditional gingerbread cookies. Families are encouraged to bring children along, as Jultomten (the Swedish version of Santa Claus) will make special appearances for holiday photo opportunities throughout the weekend. The event provides a perfect complement to Andersonville's robust holiday calendar, which begins this weekend with Small Business Saturday on November 29 and the neighborhood Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 30.

Residents looking to experience more of Andersonville's cultural celebrations can mark their calendars for the Saint Lucia Festival on December 13 and Menorah Candle Lighting on December 14, both highlighting the neighborhood's commitment to honoring diverse traditions during the holiday season.
