Hull House Museum's 'Radical Craft' Exhibition Celebrates Cultural Heritage with December Community Workshops in University Village

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/University Village Little Italy ·

University Village Little Italy residents are embracing their neighborhood's rich cultural heritage this month at the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum's popular 'Radical Craft' exhibition. The exhibition, which has drawn record visitor numbers since opening in September, showcases the neighborhood's diverse immigrant artistic traditions through rarely exhibited textiles, handbound books, restored paintings, and ceramics from the historic Hull-House Kilns.

The museum has announced a special series of December community workshops as part of the exhibition's programming, offering residents hands-on experiences with traditional crafting techniques. The upcoming workshops, which include the popular 'Mending Basics' sessions led by arts-educators from The WasteShed, provide participants with practical sewing skills while museum educators share fascinating stories about Chicago's historic garment industry that once thrived in University Village. Visitors praise the experience as "one of the best historic house tours" featuring "innovative displays and exhibits" that provide "a deep dive into craft, history, social justice and Chicago."

Residents interested in connecting with their neighborhood's cultural heritage can visit the museum any day except Mondays and Saturdays. Admission remains free with welcomed donations. Community members are encouraged to share their experiences on social media using #RadicalCraftChicago or join the conversation at upcoming December workshops featuring local artisans demonstrating traditional techniques that honor the neighborhood's diverse immigrant traditions.
