South Loop Welcomes High-Tech Innovation with Chicago's First Purpose-Built AI Data Center
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/South Loop ·
South Loop's technology landscape is getting a major upgrade as HydraVault prepares to break ground on Chicago's first purpose-built AI data center at 2538 S. Wabash Avenue. A foundation permit was recently issued for the 76,000-square-foot facility, with construction set to begin before the end of 2025, according to multiple reports this week.
The Gensler-designed facility represents a significant investment in the neighborhood and will create new technological infrastructure in an area that continues to evolve. The two-story building will feature state-of-the-art capabilities including an energy-efficient closed-loop waterless cooling system, making it one of the most environmentally friendly data centers worldwide. Power Construction, a Chicago-based contractor, will lead the construction process, working closely with Alderman Pat Dowell's office to ensure minimal disruptions to the community.
South Loop residents interested in learning more about this innovative addition to the neighborhood can look forward to community updates as the project progresses toward its completion in late 2026. The development transforms a previously underutilized site that once housed plans for an esports arena, bringing cutting-edge technology infrastructure that supports Chicago's growing reputation as a hub for innovation.
