Palmer Square Arboretum Unveils First Winter Tree Identification Series for December

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·

Palmer Square Park is embracing its historic designation as Chicago's first arboretum with a new winter educational program set to launch this December. The park received Level I arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in September 2025, making it the first Chicago Park District property to achieve this prestigious designation. This recognition celebrates the park's commitment to maintaining a thriving tree canopy and preserving its diverse collection of over 28 tree varieties, including a historic elm grove.

The Palmer Square Park Advisory Council has announced a special winter tree identification series beginning December 8th, designed to help residents appreciate the arboretum's dormant canopy. With species now clearly labeled throughout the park, these guided educational walks will allow participants to learn about winter ecology and tree identification during Chicago's colder months. The program represents the community's ongoing dedication to environmental education, following the park's recognition by the Morton Arboretum for maintaining a thriving tree canopy and preserving nearly 30 varieties of trees.

"This winter, we're focusing on creating a real community feel around our new arboretum status," shared a Palmer Square Park Advisory Council member. Residents interested in participating in the winter tree identification series can register through the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website. The program offers a perfect opportunity for neighbors to connect while appreciating Palmer Square's natural heritage during the winter season.
