Puerto Rican Arts Alliance Begins Construction on Expanded Cultural Center in Avondale
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·
The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance (PRAA) is moving forward with construction on its expanded community center at 3000 N. Elbridge Avenue in Avondale following City Council approval this summer. The expansion project combines the organization's existing building with adjacent structures just off the Milwaukee Avenue corridor.
The PRAA, which has operated out of an old firehouse in Avondale for 15 years after relocating from Humboldt Park, purchased two neighboring buildings to create a more comprehensive cultural hub. The project received unanimous City Council approval in June after community meetings showed strong neighborhood support. With architectural plans designed by LBBA now officially approved, construction is expected to take approximately eight months, with completion targeted for mid-2026.
The 27-year-old non-profit organization serves as a cultural cornerstone in Chicago, reaching over 25,000 audience members and young people annually through diverse music, arts and cultural education programming. The expanded facility will enhance PRAA's ability to operate culturally enriching programs, performances, exhibitions, and events that celebrate Puerto Rican heritage while fostering community connections. Avondale residents interested in supporting this cultural development can visit the alliance's website for upcoming events and volunteer opportunities during the transition period.
