Chicago Art Locker Expands with Featured Exhibition at Avondalia Arts Show

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Avondale ·

A vibrant community art initiative is bringing neighbors together in Avondale this winter season. The Chicago Art Locker, a colorful installation at the corner of Roscoe Street and Kildare Avenue, has become a catalyst for creativity and connection in the neighborhood, offering free artwork, art supplies, and community resources to residents.

The project, created by local artist and community advocate Shea Michals, will be featured at the upcoming Avondalia art show on Friday, December 31, from 5-9 p.m. at the Art Colony on Fletcher Street. The exhibition, hosted by the Avondale Neighborhood Association's Arts and Culture committee, will showcase items from the locker alongside other local artwork. "Art is a form of protest," explains Michals. "It can be an arts space or educational space for neighbors."

The success of the Avondale art locker has already sparked expansion, with a new yellow-dotted locker inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama recently installed in Logan Square. As the initiative grows, Michals hopes to secure funding for ten additional art lockers throughout the city. Residents interested in contributing their own artwork or supporting the project can visit the Avondalia show to learn more about this neighborhood-enhancing initiative.
