West Pullman Residents Celebrate as Red Line Extension Breaks Ground in January 2026

West Pullman residents are marking the beginning of a transformative era as the Chicago Transit Authority prepares to break ground on the long-awaited Red Line Extension project in early 2026. The ambitious $5.7 billion project will extend the CTA's busiest rail line by 5.5 miles from 95th Street to 130th Street, including four new stations that will significantly improve transportation access for Far South Side communities.
"This project is transformational for our city, especially for the South Side," said Mayor Brandon Johnson. "It's an investment in people, creating equitable transportation options and driving economic growth across communities." The project represents more than just infrastructure development—it addresses long-standing transportation inequities while fostering growth and opportunity in Chicago's South Side communities, including West Pullman. The extension is expected to generate substantial economic benefits, creating approximately 12,500 construction jobs and potentially 59,800 indirect jobs through transit-oriented development projects and improved access to the area.
"Communities across the city have long benefited from access to transit and, as a result, greater economic opportunities," said Ted Villaire from the Active Transportation Alliance. "Roseland, Altgeld Gardens, Pullman, and the other communities adjoining the extension deserve the same type of development and transit access." West Pullman residents interested in learning more about construction timelines and employment opportunities can attend upcoming community meetings where CTA representatives will share additional project details.
