Palmer Square's Arboretum Designation Sparks New Community Tree Education Program
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square Park's recent designation as Chicago's first accredited arboretum has inspired a new community initiative set to launch next week. The Palmer Square Park Advisory Council announced plans for a monthly tree education series that will help residents learn about and care for the park's impressive collection of nearly 30 tree varieties and its historic Elm Grove.
The accreditation, awarded through a program run by Morton Arboretum in September 2025, recognized Palmer Square's commitment to maintaining a thriving tree canopy. According to park officials, the new education program will feature guided tours, hands-on tree care workshops, and special sessions for children to learn about urban forestry.
"This designation gives more weight to tree preservation and education in our neighborhood," said Steve Hier, who helped found the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square and has been instrumental in the park's transformation over decades. Community members interested in participating in the inaugural workshop can register through the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website for the first session scheduled for January 15, 2026.
