Massive Barnes & Noble Flagship Store to Revitalize Loop's State Street This Summer

By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·

Barnes & Noble is making a grand return to Chicago's Loop this summer with its largest store in the city—a 30,000-square-foot flagship location at 150 N. State Street. The three-story bookstore, expected to open in June 2026, will occupy the former Old Navy space that closed in 2023. The store's design is still underway and may open in phases, with plans to include a café in later development stages. This major retailer's arrival represents a welcome addition to State Street, which has been working to overcome high vacancy rates since the pandemic.

"The Chicago market is a very important one for us, and we're really happy to be opening in the Loop and to open a store of this size," said Janine Flanigan, vice president of store design for Barnes & Noble. The company is experiencing remarkable growth nationally, with 58 new locations opened in 2025 and 60 more planned for this year. Each store is now designed to be unique, with local staff choosing which books to feature. For Chicago, the Loop flagship marks the return of a familiar brand to a familiar address, hopefully attracting readers to browse shelves and linger.

Loop residents and visitors can look forward to this significant addition to the neighborhood's retail landscape, offering a welcoming space for book lovers. The opening signals growing confidence in the Loop's continued revitalization as a vibrant, 24/7 neighborhood. Book lovers are encouraged to follow Barnes & Noble's social media for updates on opening events and special programming that will likely accompany this major store launch.
