Imani Village Begins First Phase of Housing Construction in West Pullman Area
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·
West Pullman residents will soon witness the construction of new affordable housing as Imani Village begins building 80 modular two-story homes on the former steel distribution site in the nearby Pullman area. The initial phase of this five-stage development is scheduled to start this year, bringing much-needed housing options to Chicago's Far South Side.
The ambitious Imani Village project, developed by Trinity United Church of Christ, represents a transformative vision for the community—an "eco-friendly mixed-use intergenerational community with a village environment, committed to life-long education, health and economic development." In development since 2009, the project has already acquired land and raised nearly $8 million in funding while securing numerous private and public partnerships. Village president Patricia Eggleston explains the initiative aims to "win the community's heart" by creating a model community focused on holistic well-being.
Beyond housing, the 40-acre campus will feature a 66,000 square foot "empowerment zone" with a clinic and urgent care center, workforce development resources, environmental training facilities, and childcare services. Residents will also enjoy a four-story "food hub" with vertical gardens, an indoor farmers market, and a soul food restaurant, plus an athletic center featuring programs like girls' flag football. Community members interested in learning more about upcoming construction or employment opportunities can attend the information session scheduled for next week at Trinity United Church of Christ.
