Historic Noel State Bank Building in Wicker Park Transformed into Barnes & Noble's Most Beautiful Bookstore

Barnes & Noble has officially opened its new Wicker Park bookstore, the second to launch in Chicago this year following their return to Lincoln Park in May. The stunning location occupies the historic Noel State Bank building, one of Chicago's architectural gems situated in the heart of the landmarked Milwaukee Avenue District. The ornate interior, even more impressive than the exterior, has been sensitively preserved by the bookseller to create what many are calling a spectacular bookstore.

"We open what is now one of the most beautiful bookstores anywhere in the world," said James Daunt, CEO of Barnes & Noble. "Its architects in 1919 described it as the dernier cri in bank architecture, and indeed, only bankers could have thought to build something so ornate." The 1601 N. Milwaukee Ave. location sits at the intersection with North and Damen Avenues, featuring distinctive architectural elements like a wedge shape and columns that required specially designed shelving to fit around odd angles and in nooks. Store manager James Pioth notes that customers and employees are thrilled about the opening, with many remarking, "This is the perfect place for a bookstore."

Wicker Park residents are encouraged to visit the new literary destination which opened on October 30th. The grand opening featured book signings by several notable authors including Jeneva Rose, Jason Hammel of Lula Cafe, Donald Hyun Kiolbassa, Mindy Segal, and Ruth Spiro. According to Pioth, the store will cater to local tastes that will likely favor literary fiction and history, though offerings will continually adapt to customer preferences.
