Cozy Cat Cafe Opens in Palmer Square with Local Art Installation
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square residents have a new gathering spot to warm up this winter with the opening of Whiskers & Beans, the neighborhood's first cat cafe, located at 2138 N. Kedzie Avenue. The innovative cafe, which officially opened its doors on January 21, 2026, combines locally-roasted coffee with feline companionship in a cozy space that showcases rotating works from Palmer Square artists.
The cafe sits just steps from Palmer Square Park, the lovely 7.69-acre green space that's a neighborhood favorite and received Level I arboretum accreditation in September 2025—the first Chicago Park District location to be designated as an accredited arboretum. Cafe owner Maria Sanchez has partnered with the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council to host a special "Arboretum Art Series" featuring work inspired by the park's collection of over 28 tree varieties. The cafe will also serve as a community hub for park program registrations, with Winter programs running from January 5 to March 15, 2026.
Visitors can enjoy signature drinks named after tree species found in the park while interacting with rescue cats available for adoption through a partnership with a local animal shelter. The cafe hosts weekly "Cats & Coffee" community meetups every Sunday from 10am-12pm, offering neighbors a chance to connect during the winter months.
