Palmer Square Gardeners Launch Spring Community Planting Initiative to Enhance Arboretum Status
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Palmer Square ·
Palmer Square Park, which received Level I arboretum accreditation through the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program in September 2025, is launching a new community initiative to further enhance its tree canopy. The designation, which made Palmer Square the first Chicago Park District location to be recognized as an accredited arboretum, acknowledged the park's commitment to maintaining a diverse collection of over 28 tree varieties and its historic elm grove.
Building on this achievement, the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council announced this week the Spring Planting Initiative, which will begin in early March 2026. The program aims to involve local residents in expanding the park's already impressive collection of 53 hybrid elms and enhancing educational opportunities around urban forestry. Community members will work alongside certified arborists to plant native species that complement the existing tree collection while supporting local wildlife habitat. The initiative includes installation of new educational signage detailing the park's unique tree specimens and their ecological benefits.
Interested residents can register for the program through the Palmer Square Park Advisory Council website. The first community planting session is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026, with tools and saplings provided. "We're inviting everyone to become stewards of this unique natural space," said a park council representative. "This initiative will strengthen our neighborhood's connection to nature while ensuring Palmer Square's arboretum status thrives for generations to come."
