West Pullman Celebrates as Red Line Extension Construction Set for 2026 Groundbreaking
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/West Pullman ·
West Pullman residents received exciting news this week as the Chicago Transit Authority confirmed plans to break ground on the long-awaited Red Line Extension project in early 2026. The ambitious construction project, scheduled for completion by 2030, will transform transportation options for the Far South Side community.
The extension will connect West Pullman to downtown Chicago with a new Michigan Avenue station being built directly in the neighborhood. The 5.5-mile project will extend the Red Line from its current terminus at 95th Street down to 130th Street, adding four new fully accessible stations that include bus, bike, pedestrian, and park-and-ride facilities. This transit improvement goes far beyond faster commutes—it represents a transformative investment that will connect the community, improve daily travel, and open doors to economic growth and opportunity. Once completed, residents will have direct, reliable connections to downtown Chicago, hospitals, schools, and job centers, with travel times reduced by up to 30 minutes each way.
"Extending CTA's 'L' system to the Far South Side will improve residents' access to education, employment, healthcare, and other crucial services," stated a CTA representative. "The Red Line Extension will also attract construction jobs and future development along the proposed corridor. Roseland, Altgeld Gardens, Pullman, and the other communities adjoining the extension deserve the same type of development and transit access." Residents interested in learning more about the project can attend upcoming community meetings where CTA officials will share detailed construction timelines and address neighborhood questions.
