New Affordable Housing Complex Welcomes Families to Humboldt Park: 'Historic Memory Can Be Passed From One Generation to Another'

Humboldt Park celebrated a significant community milestone this week with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new 40-unit affordable apartment building at 1237 N. California Avenue. The modern complex, designed by DesignBridge, features a variety of living spaces including 10 one-bedrooms, 25 two-bedrooms, and five three-bedrooms, along with amenities such as a community room, business center, laundry facilities, and both indoor and outdoor parking spaces.

"These affordable apartments are going to enable 40 families to continue to call Humboldt Park home," said Hispanic Housing Development Corp. CEO Tony Hernandez during the February 11th ceremony. The building is already fully leased, demonstrating the strong demand for affordable housing in the rapidly changing neighborhood. Alderman Jessie Fuentes (26th) emphasized the development's importance, saying, "When we think about projects like this, we dream of a community where neighborhoods don't have to say goodbye to their childhood memories, or where children don't have to grow up in a neighborhood that their parents do not have ties in."

The $32 million project received primary funding from the city of Chicago, with additional support from the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Merchants Capital, Freddie Mac, and ComEd. In a promising sign for continued community development, Hispanic Housing also broke ground in January on the redevelopment of the historic Pioneer Arcade building in Humboldt Park, which will be converted into 61 affordable senior housing units, and is partnering with the Puerto Rican Cultural Center on two more affordable housing buildings near Division Street and Western Avenue.
