Raygun Set to Open New State Street Location in The Loop, Revitalizing Retail Corridor
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/The Loop ·
The Loop's retail revival continues with Raygun, an independent printing, design and clothing chain, preparing to open its newest location next month at 5 N. State Street. Owner Mike Draper, who began by selling T-shirts on the street in 2004 while still in college, has grown the business into a Midwest success story with 11 existing locations. The company's upcoming Chicago store marks its 12th location and represents a significant vote of confidence in State Street's retail future.
Draper sees opportunity in the Loop's gradual post-pandemic recovery, noting that while still expensive, "it's cheaper than it was in 2019." His business philosophy echoes Warren Buffett's advice: "When other people are cautious, you get aggressive." The timing appears promising as Chicago's central business district reached 63.5% activity compared to pre-pandemic levels as of last fall, showing steady improvement from previous measurements. Avison Young's market intelligence analyst Anthony Zoccola notes "a lot of positive momentum year-over-year" in downtown activity.
Loop visitors have plenty to look forward to this month beyond new retail openings. The Chicago Auto Show, America's largest and longest-running auto exhibition, runs through February 16th at McCormick Place, featuring the latest vehicles and interactive displays. Meanwhile, winter enthusiasts can still enjoy ice skating in Millennium Park, with two pop-up rinks offering scenic views of the snowy skyline. Foodies can participate in the final days of Chicago Restaurant Week, which concludes February 8th. And for those seeking a physical challenge, the Hustle Chicago stair climb returns to the former Hancock Building on February 22nd, bringing thousands of participants together to tackle 94 floors while supporting lung health and clean air initiatives.
