Last Call for Logan Square's Beloved Open Books: Nonprofit Bookstore Closing Milwaukee Avenue Location March 1
By Socialhood News · Il/Chicago/Logan Square ·
Book lovers in Logan Square have just days left to visit one of the neighborhood's most cherished literary havens. Open Books, the beloved nonprofit bookstore at 2068 N. Milwaukee Avenue, will close its Logan Square location on March 1 after three years in the community — with its Pilsen and West Loop stores remaining open.
The sprawling shop announced the closure citing financial challenges, explaining the decision was made to "best protect our mission" and ensure equitable access to books and literacy programs across Chicago. Beyond its impressive inventory of affordable new, used, and donated books, Open Books – Logan Square became a true community anchor, hosting poetry slams, book fairs, and literacy events, with all profits funding children's reading programs citywide. The store's exterior, transformed into a whimsical mural by Chicago artist Nick 'Sick' Fisher, became a Milwaukee Avenue landmark in its own right. With its departure, City Lit Books at 2523 N. Kedzie Blvd. will remain Logan Square's only independent bookstore.
The good news: there's still time to show your support. Open Books – Logan Square is open Friday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the remainder of February, and neighbors can also shop its inventory online. Swing by, grab a great read, and help send this community gem off in style.
