What should replace one of Galewood's most beloved landmarks? That's the question galvanizing the neighborhood right now — and residents have a lot to say. Since Chicago-based developer McCaffery Interests unveiled plans to transform the former Mars Wrigley candy factory at 2019 N. Oak Park Ave. into nearly 500 residential units, Galewood has responded with a loud, unified message: we want more.

The 20-acre site, which anchored the neighborhood for nearly a century before closing in 2024, holds deep sentimental and practical significance. Its Spanish Revival-style administration building already carries landmark status and would be preserved under any plan. But residents who packed a community meeting hosted by the Galewood Montclare Community Organization made clear they're dreaming bigger — calling for a library, a job training center, an indoor sports arena, senior services, and retail that reflects the community's actual needs. "The key word in community is unity," said resident Idella Mister. "We want to see something that's going to help the community."
