Art Comes Alive on Milwaukee Avenue: New Northwest Art Trail Puts Portage Park on Chicago's Cultural Map

Portage Park has a brand-new reason to take a stroll down Milwaukee Avenue. Arts Alive Chicago, with support from state Sen. Robert Martwick, has launched the Northwest Art Trail — a vibrant cultural corridor threading through Jefferson Park and Portage Park that features sculptures, murals, and arts organizations woven right into the fabric of the neighborhood streetscape.

"Art is essential," said Sen. Martwick, who helped Arts Alive Chicago conceive and launch the trail. The route is designed to be explored on foot or by bike, giving residents and visitors alike a fresh way to discover the creative spirit that has long simmered on the Northwest Side. From eye-catching murals to outdoor sculptures, the trail transforms an everyday commute into a rolling gallery experience — and shines a well-deserved spotlight on the local arts organizations that call this corridor home.

The timing couldn't be better. With spring just around the corner, the Chicago Park District has also announced that online registration for Portage Park's spring and summer programs opens March 9, with in-person registration beginning March 14 — meaning neighbors can sign up now for fitness classes, cultural arts programming, and more.
